ZwillGen Bolsters Artificial Intelligence Practice With Group Acquisition of Luminos.Law Lawyers and Data Scientists

WASHINGTON, D.C., JANUARY 8, 2025 – ZwillGen announced today a group acquisition to add the lawyers, data scientists, proprietary processes, and technology from Luminos.Law LLP, an innovative multidisciplinary firm that blends legal advisory services with the skills of senior data scientists, to help clients better understand and effectively deploy transformative artificial intelligence technology. The acquisition launches ZwillGen’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division focusing on red team testing and audits for AI models and systems, alongside the firm’s long-standing legal and policy guidance around AI technology.

“ZwillGen is committed to remaining on the cutting-edge of the intersection of unregulated and increasingly regulated technology,” said ZwillGen Founder and Managing Member Marc Zwillinger. “The biggest names in technology rely on us to guide them through the increased scrutiny surrounding AI, and by adding the team at Luminos.Law, we are able to provide technical assessments, audits, and certifications of our clients’ AI technology that regulators are increasingly requiring.”

Luminos.Law Managing Partner Brenda Leong is now Director of the newly formed ZwillGen AI Division and will continue to work closely with in-coming Luminos.Law colleagues, particularly Senior Associate Jey Kumarasamy who is joining ZwillGen as Legal Director.

“At Luminos.Law, we have been aware of ZwillGen’s work and excellent reputation in privacy and information security, including with regard to AI, and once we started talking we recognized the overlap with our mutual clients and communal values,” said Leong. “Our independent and shared clients will further benefit from the collective knowledge and diverse experience we contribute from the legal, analytic, data science, regulatory, and policy perspectives.”

Leong served in the U.S. Air Force before becoming the senior counsel and director of AI and ethics at the Future of Privacy Forum, where she oversaw resource development for the implementation and analysis of AI and ML technologies for FPF member companies. She currently serves as adjunct faculty teaching AI and Biometrics at IE University Law School, is an Advisory Board member of the IAPP AI Center, and is a trainer for their AI Governance Professional certification and training credential. Leong is an expert on digital identity and the responsible use of biometrics, with a focus on facial recognition, facial analysis, and emerging issues around voice-operated systems. She will lead and oversee the operations of ZwillGen’s newly created AI Division.

Prior to joining Luminos.Law, Kumarasamy worked as a corporate and commercial lawyer with a focus on technology transactions. He also has a technical background with software engineering experience in both the private and public sectors. Kumarasamy has a degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Toronto and is a graduate of McGill University Faculty of Law.

The Luminos.Law group joins a ZwillGen team that regularly counsels developers and users of machine learning, large language models, and other technologies powered by AI. The firm’s AI practice advises clients on the development and use of AI-powered technologies, responding to regulatory inquiries and crafting policies for internal uses of AI.
